Arguably Ecuador’s most beautiful historic destination, this mountain town above the Río Tomebamba is the third-largest city in the country and its center has been named a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Walk down cobblestone streets, stay in beautifully preserved colonial-era mansions, visit historic churches, and more.

Baños

Nestled right at the foot of active volcano Tungurahua, the small city of Baños is one of the most popular tourist spots in Ecuador. The place is known as the “Gateway to the Amazon,” as it is the starting point of plenty of jungle tours.

Different wildlife can be spotted in this small archipelago of volcanic islands such as marine iguanas, giant tortoises, sea lions, penguins, and a variety of bird species. Take a cruise or join a tour and see the wonder that inspired Charles Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection.

Otavalo Market

Shop for some authentic local art, crafts, and clothing expertly crafted by local artisans in the small, colorful town of Otavalo. Many people from all over the world visit Otavalo for the Saturday market and to visit Plaza de Ponchos.

Montañita

Montañita is a coastal town in Ecuador’s South Pacific Coast. The laidback beachfront community is home to some of the best seaside resorts, where you can enjoy some excellent surfing.
