Amazon Rain Forest | Living the Life in Ecuador

Ecuador may be more famous for its Galápagos Islands, but the country has plenty of other astounding natural wonders. It is home to a portion of the 1.4-billion-acre Amazon rainforest, for one. Extending across eight different countries, the Amazon represents no less than half of the remaining Amazon forests on the planet.

Complex ecosystems thrive in the country’s stunning rainforests, home to plants, trees, and animals you can’t find anywhere else.

Guided tours whisk you past numerous species of flora and fauna and some of greenest scenery you can find.

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

At 250,000 acres, the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve rests on the side of the Amazon that falls within Ecuador’s boundaries. You can glimpse anacondas, monkeys, pink river dolphins, and more.

Over 60 species of orchids and around 2,000 species of bromeliads blooming in the area are a testament to the reserve’s plant diversity. There are lagoons, flooded forests, and a river that flows right through the center.

Yasuni National Park Biosphere Reserve

This reserve in the Amazon Basin is tucked into the eastern foothills of the Andes. It’s home to jaguars, marmosets, caimans, and macaws, among others. There are thousands of species of plants and trees, and researchers believe there are as many as 100 species of trees per acre.

Two un-contacted tribes – the Tagaeri and the Taromenane–live in isolation in Yasuni. It is believed that only a handful of members are left per tribe.

Limoncocha Ecological Reserve

The reserve with its over 464 species of winged creatures is ideal for bird watching. More than 70 species of mammals, and over 90 species of reptiles call Limoncocha home.

The Limoncocha Lagoon, an important part of the reserve, originated from the arm of the Pishira River. The lagoon is home to over 30 species of fish, along with caimans, turtles, and charapas. Aquatic and semi-aquatic plants thrive in surrounding areas.
